WHAT IS SANGRIA?

In case you are unfamiliar with sangria, it is a wine based co*cktail. The basic ingredients in most sangria recipes are wine, a sweetener of some sort, a liqueur, a soda or non-alcoholic mixer, and fruit. Lots of fruit!

This sangria has a white wine base in the form of Pinot Grigio, a little bit of sugar, vodka for the liqueur, lemon-lime soda for the mixer and strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries as the fruit.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SANGRIA

You can use this summer sangria recipe as a base recipe that you can easily switch up for some summer co*cktail fun! It has all the traditional elements of sangria, making it perfect for recipe inspiration.

If you have an idea for switching up the sangria recipe, just make an ingredient switch, like changing up the type of wine, adding a flavored vodka in place of plain vodka, or trying a different mixer.

Almost anything goes when it comes to sangria recipes so have plenty of fun! I’ve made white wine sangrias, sparkling sangrias like this one, rose sangrias and red wine sangrias, and I have loved them all for different occasions!

HOW TO CHOOSE THE WINE FOR YOUR SANGRIA

Most white wines work well for sangria; however, you do not want to use an oaked wine. This is most important if choosing to use a chardonnay. I primarily tend to use aSauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. If you decide to try a sweeter wine, like a Riesling, you might want to skip adding any sweetener.

For red wine, a Spanish wine is always a good choice, as well as a Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir.

While you want something tasty, you do not need to buy an expensive wine for sangria as it will lose it’s complexity as you add more ingredients into the punch.

WHEN TO ADD THE FRUIT TO YOUR SANGRIA

There are a ton of great options for adding fruit to your sangria. Consider:

  • citrus fruits like lemons, limes, and oranges
  • stone fruits like peaches, nectarines, cherries, and plums
  • pome fruits like apples and pears
  • tropical fruit like pineapple and mango
  • berries.

The softer fruits, like berries or melon balls, should be added closer to serving instead of the night below; otherwise they might get a little mushy.

So for this summer sangria recipe, I made the sangria a few hours before guests arrived which was perfect for using soft berries in the recipe.

WHEN TO ADD THE BUBBLES TO YOUR SANGRIA

If you’re adding anything with bubbles or carbonation, such as club soda or the lemon-lime soda in this recipe, it is best to add right before serving. It will help maintain the fizz it gives. This is the same for using sparkling wine.
